Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center

We dug in the crown of a recent avalanche. The slide appeared to be triggered by a falling tree. This was likely the result of very strong winds that were impacting the area.

Avalanche warning and near historic snowfall. 6" of SWE in last 6 days.

It was raining 500 feet below our pit location. Stability decreased as you dropped in elevation.

SH has gotten stronger quickly.

Well developed depth hoar near the ground wasn't reactive. However, with a big load 1-2" of SWE, avalanches are still possible on this layer.
