The basal facet layer is so thin, in most locations it's not continuous over the terrain, broken by rocks and vegetation. I think there are only isolated places, with smooth ground like rock slabs or grass, where you could connect enough snow for a slide to fail on the depth hoar.

Winds increased two hours later out of the south and began to transport snow. It also starting snowing hard as the next wave of the storm blew in. The new snow was cracking at the interface with the crust.
