Mt Shasta Avalanche Center - Shasta/Trinity Nat'l Forest

HS: 202 cm / Recent wind slab avalanche on NE aspect of Green Butte, ATL, 38 degree slope, 9,200 ft. Avalanche occurred sometime during recent storm. HS-N-D2 / Slab crown 6" to 2', 200 ft wide, 600 ft length. Above treeline new snow: Avg HS - 30-35 cm / Scoured areas: 15-20 cm / Drifts: 80-90 cm Wind loading on NE-E-SE slopes. Many hidden rocks just below soft snow surface.

Heavy snowfall, rapid loading; Observations indicate wind slab, dry loose and soft slab avalanche problems

Wind textured snow surface. Very good stability.

Shovel tilt test lead to easy failures within new snow. No propagation. Snow pit dug down to knife hardness rain crust layer. Deep tap tests led to no failures at crust layer.
